Party Craft - Crayon Art

In case you missed the overview (click here to check it out), here's a little background. M turned 11 last month and wanted to have a colourful party. She chose to invite two friends for a sleepover instead of lots of friends for a shorter party. I plan on posting about several different elements of her party and will link them all back to the overview.

We decided to make some melted crayon art to go with our colourful theme.

Before the party we decided to do a trial run. We really didn't worry about the arrangement of our colours.

1) Arrange crayons
2) Glue in place
3 & 4) Melt using a hairdryer

The girls had lots of fun and made lots of mess. Here are a few things I learned from the process:

1. Crayon placement does matter. It's better to group similar colours because if you put them randomly the dark ones cover the other colours.

2. Wax takes a long time to melt with a hair dryer. I thought we were doing something wrong. We weren't. It just took time.

3. Wax splatters... a lot! We placed tinfoil on a cookie sheet and places our canvas in it. It helped but not a lot. I had to scrape a lot of wax off the floor. For the party we left the table cloth in place. It caught most of the wax but there was still a little bit that made it onto the floor.

All in all, it was a pretty awesome project. The girls arranged their crayons (2 made rainbows and 1 did a mirror image). I did the gluing because they were unsure about using a glue gun. Then they took turns holding each others' canvases while they melted the crayons. They seemed to have a lot of fun and took their artwork home with them the next day.

  1. What an awesome idea! I've seen this for little ones (like 4 year olds) but I can see how a somewhat older kiddo would appreciate it more.. and be safer.
    The girls did great art!

  2. ooh , I love this project! (I love anything artsy :) Thanks for sharing!
I would love it if you would share this (and anything else you have been working on) at my linky party! http://domesticrandomness.blogspot.com/2013/01/friday-fascinations-8-everything-linky.html
